Refurbishing a used robot is a skilled process in which attention to detail is a must. A checklist is helpful in determining which actions should be taken. Proper reconditioning will ensure that the robot is returned to factory specifications and repeatability. Only after these items are completed should the robot be identified as refurbished. Notes should be kept of all corrective actions.
The following items should be part of the robot reconditioning process:
- A visual inspection of all batteries, bolts, cable harness, the large A/C motors and encoders, the counter balance, the wrist area, the pulley edge, the controller wire harness, all of the cables and connections, controller boards, servo amp components, fans, and teach pendant should be performed.
- The bolts and covers on the robot body should be checked and tightened.
- A physical test of the axis should be performed to check for irregularities. Power up and move each axis with the teach pendant. Not only should you verify repeatability, but also run a loop program to ensure it is complete.
- The harmonic grease should be replaced in the large A/C motors and encoders. The bearing grease in the counter balance should be replaced.
- The harmonic drive should be checked for irregularities and replacement grease should be added.
- The O-rings should be checked and replaced if needed.
- The batteries should be changed in both the robot and controller. The cables and connections inside the controller cabinet should be checked and tested. The fans should be tested and the filters checked and replaced if needed.
- After thoroughly cleaning all surfaces, the machine areas should be taped and loose paint should be removed. Rough surfaces should be wire brushed and wiped down to prepare for paint. A spray gun or paint roller should be used to apply paint that matches the original paint. After the first coat dries, a second coat should be applied. Then remove the tape and inspect the quality.
- The teach pendant and cable should be inspected for cracks and damage. The casing should be opened to inspect the inner components. The E-stop, Hold, and other function buttons should be checked. The dead man switch should be checked. It should be retrofitted for a 3 position switch as required. Power up and move the axis with the teach pendant.
